The Federazione Speleologica Veneta (FSV), which represents 28 speleological groups, was founded after the issue of the regional Law 54/1980 "Interventions for the development of the speleological research and for the preservation of the speleological estate of the Veneto Region". Thanks to this law the "regional Register of the karstic areas and of the caves" was founded.

The main objectives of the FSV are: the promotion and the coordination of speleological research, the development of contacts between regional groups; the preservation and the protection of the speleological environment; the development and the management of the relations with the Veneto Region Administration (Law 54/1980); the distribution of reports of speleological activities by means of publications.

The FSV is made up of the president, the secretary and the assembly of the groups' delegates. Furthermore it includes some commissions for specific subjects: the scientific commission evaluates the scientific projects and offers consultancy to the groups; the photographic commission deals with photography in caves (technologies, documentation, photographic archives, etc.); the speleo-diving commission discusses the problems regarding this type of activity.

The Federazione Speleologica Veneta, with the financial contributions of the Region, supports the development of the knowledge of the Veneto karstic phenomena, by means of appropriate scientific projects. The projects are carried out by speleologists with professional skills supported by the partners of the speleological groups of the FSV, also in co-operation with universities and research institutes.

At present the projects are: the systematic monitoring of water of the greater cavities and karst springs of the region, through chemical and microbiological analysis; the biological monitoring of springs; the study of the climatic changes through petrographical and geochemical analysis on stalagmites; the study of the karst denudation using the micrometer surveying 160 stations; the 3D-photo documentation of the karstic phenomena and the creation of photographic archives; the production of the "Spluga della Preta" film.

The FSV is provided with four underground laboratories of biospeleology, used also for teaching; moreover in collaboration with the Municipality of Valstagna (VI), FSV directs the Oliero Museum of Speleology and Karst (about 15,000 visitors/y). Every year the FSV edits the magazine "Speleologia Veneta" that collects the results of the explorative activity and of researches carried out by the regional groups.
